Undersea Research Associates (URA)

In the course of surveying over three-thousand square miles of bottomland of the Great Lakes the URA have discovered a significant number of shipwrecks that were lost throughout the history of Great Lakes shipping.

URA has contributed significantly to the growing list of dive attractions in Lake Huron and there are a number competent charter services in the area who cater to the shipwreck enthusiast.

Dave Trotter founded Underwater Research Associates (URA) in the 1970s and has dedicated more than 43 years to the exploration and discovery of Great Lakes shipwrecks. Throughout that time, numerous researchers, divers, and volunteers have joined Dave's team, contributing their expertise to the search for historic shipwrecks and the preservation of Great Lakes maritime history.

Over the decades, the URA team has surveyed more than 3,000 square miles of the Great Lakes' lakebeds, developing advanced techniques in underwater search, sonar interpretation, mapping, and documentation. Their persistent efforts have resulted in the discovery of more than 95 previously unidentified shipwrecks, along with submerged aircraft and other significant underwater artifacts.

Each discovery represents countless hours of research, planning, and systematic searching. Many of these historic wrecks have since been explored and documented by Dave and the URA dive team, adding valuable knowledge to the history of the Great Lakes and helping preserve these remarkable underwater time capsules.
